Introduction to Linux In-Person

In this workshop, attendees will gain foundational knowledge of the Linux operating system, focusing on basic skills within a terminal, which is particularly useful for connecting to servers and systems such as High-Performance Computing (HPC) environments. We will cover:

  • Linux Basics: Understanding the Linux file system, command-line interface, and essential commands (pwd, ls, cd, mkdir, rm, and more).
  • Server Connections: Connecting to remote Linux servers using SSH and managing file transfers with scp.
  • Editing Files: Working with basic text editors such as nano.
  • Software Updates: Discussion of package managers
  • Visual Studio Code Integration: Using VSCode’s Remote Development extension to connect to and edit files on Linux servers.
