Why Learn to Code with R? In-Person

This workshop introduces R not primarily as a programming language to master, but as a tool for working with data, making research more reproducible, and expanding what researchers and students can do with information.

The session is designed for a mixed audience. Rather than trying to teach participants how to program in R in one hour, it answers a more foundational question:

Why would I want to learn this in the first place?

By the end of the workshop, participants should be able to:

  • Explain several reasons researchers and students use R.
  • Distinguish between spreadsheet-based and code-based approaches to working with data.
  • Recognize situations where R may be especially useful.
  • Read and modify a small amount of R code.
  • Identify realistic next steps for learning R.
